Numerical Investigation of the Combined Influence of Three-Plug Arrangement and Slot Positioning on Wankel Engine Performance

A numerical methodology for three-dimensional fluid dynamics and chemical kinetics simulation of the combustion gas-exchange processes in Wankel engine was developed validated. Two approaches performance enhancement were studied—the addition a slot rear side rotor recess, installation third plug trailing working chamber, to two available plugs mounted leading baseline engine. The obtained results showed that suggested three-plug arrangement significantly improves performance. Furthermore, positioning further from passage between sides is preference higher mean in-chamber pressures. Nevertheless, maximum performance, distance should be brought an optimum as during intake stroke there loss inducted charge due backflow hole. For presence necessary prevention early flame quenching side, while keeping added volume minimum. Moreover, off-center, flow intensity towards plugs, accordingly, efficiency. dual-plug ignition system (two side) it preferable maintain minimum clearance side.
